Managing Reserved Instances (RIs) is crucial for optimizing costs in AWS. To avoid losing the benefits of expiring RIs, it’s essential to set up email alerts. In this article, we’ll walk through the steps to create RI expiry alerts from the AWS Management Console.

Step 1: Navigate to Billing and Cost Management

  • Open the AWS Console.
  • Make sure you are logged in with an account that has Billing permissions (e.g., AWSBillingFullAccess role).
  • Open Billing and Cost Management Dashboard

Step 2: Go to Reservations > Manage Alert Subscription

  1. In the Billing Dashboard, look at the left sidebar and click on Reservations.
  2. Under Reservations, click Manage Alert Subscription.

Step 3: Configure Alert Settings

  1. Select Alert Frequency
  2. Add Email Recipients
  • Use a comma-separated format if adding multiple recipients (e.g., team@company.com, admin@company.com).

Step 4: Review and Save Your Subscription

  1. Review the Alert Settings to ensure the frequency and recipient emails are correct.
  2. Click Save Subscription to confirm and enable the alerts.

Conclusion

By following these steps, you can set up email alerts for AWS Reserved Instance expiry and ensure your team is notified in advance. This helps you proactively plan renewals and optimize AWS costs.
